Leeudoringstad, North West – A 42-year-old Zimbabwean national, Gordon Sibanda, is set to appear before the Leeudoringstad Periodical Court on Tuesday, 10 June 2025 for a bail application, following his initial appearance at the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.
Sibanda faces a charge of illegal possession of illicit cigarettes after a significant bust earlier this month.
He was arrested on Monday, 2 June 2025, after police officers stopped and searched a truck traveling along the Leeudoringstad/Orkney road. During the search, law enforcement discovered 169 boxes of illicit Chief and Remington brand cigarettes, with an estimated street value of R850,000.00.

Both the truck and the illicit goods were confiscated as evidence. Police confirmed that the arrest forms part of a broader effort to combat the illegal tobacco trade in the region.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reaffirmed its commitment to crack down on smuggling operations and urged the public to report suspicious activity as part of the ongoing #StopIllicitTrade campaign.
