Soweto Taxi Driver’s Disappearance Ends in Tragedy as he is Found Dead Near Randfontein Mine

Farewell to Lebohang Monama: A Life Cut Short Too Soon

The streets of Emndeni, Soweto are quieter this week. A familiar voice, a familiar laugh, and a familiar presence will no longer be there. Lebohang Monama (37), a taxi driver known for his warmth and cheerful spirit, has been taken from his family and community in the most painful way.

For days, his loved ones held on to hope. He had gone missing last Thursday, leaving behind unanswered calls, worried relatives, and a young child waiting for her father. His taxi, a white Toyota Quantum, was later found burnt out in Slovoville. But still, they hoped he would come home.

That hope ended near a lonely mine in Randfontein, where his body was found. He had been shot at the back of the head, and by the time he was discovered, days had already passed. The brutality of it has left his family shattered.

Speaking through her grief, Mbali Gwebu, a family spokesperson, shared what Lebohang meant to those around him:

“We are deeply heartbroken by what has happened to Lebohang. He was a cheerful person who was always laughing. We will miss him dearly.”

Those who knew him say Lebohang had a way of lifting spirits, even on difficult days. His laughter carried in conversations, his energy filled the spaces he walked into. Now, silence sits in its place.

The Monama family has expressed deep gratitude to Jozi FM and the Soweto community for standing by them through sleepless nights of searching and waiting. In their darkest hour, the outpouring of support has been a small light.

His tragic death is also a painful reminder of the dangers taxi drivers face every day — long hours, constant risks, and, too often, violence. But beyond the industry headlines, this is about a son, a father, a friend, and a man whose life was stolen too soon.

Lebohang’s story will not be remembered only for how it ended, but for the joy, love, and laughter he gave to those lucky enough to know him.

May his soul rest in peace. 🕊️
