Johannesburg – In a bold step toward strengthening vehicle security and disrupting organized crime, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela have officially launched a new high-tech license plate system. The announcement was made earlier today at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
The advanced registration system introduces QR-coded license plates and tamper-evident decals, a first for South Africa, aimed at curbing crimes such as vehicle theft, cloning, and kidnappings.
“This is a game-changer for safety and security,” said Premier Lesufi. “We are deploying technology to disrupt criminal networks and protect our communities.”
🔍 Key Features of the New Plates:
Scannable QR Code: Linked to a cloud-based database, allowing law enforcement to instantly verify vehicle details, licensing status, and check for alerts on stolen vehicles. Tamper-Evident Decal: Built to self-destruct or tear visibly when removed, making it difficult for criminals to duplicate or alter license plates. The design complies with SANS 1116 security standards. Manufacturer’s Mark: To ensure traceability and prevent unauthorized production or distribution of plates.
🚗 Rollout Plan:
The rollout begins with g-Fleet Management vehicles as part of a six-month pilot project. Depending on its success, the program will be expanded province-wide.
🛡️ A Response to Rising Crime
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over vehicle-related crimes in Gauteng, one of the most populous and crime-affected provinces in the country. By embracing innovation, the provincial government aims to modernize enforcement tools and boost public safety.
This move positions Gauteng at the forefront of smart governance, merging technology with accountability in a way that may soon become the national standard.
