
The main suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale, Philangenkosi Makhanya, has been shot and killed by police during a confrontation in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to reports, Makhanya was hiding in a residential complex when the South African Police Service (SAPS) attempted to apprehend him. Upon police announcing their presence, he opened fire, prompting officers to return fire. Makhanya was fatally wounded in the exchange.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is currently on the scene.

Background:
Olorato Mongale’s body was discovered near Alexandra township in northern Johannesburg last Sunday. Makhanya was one of three suspects wanted in connection with the case. The other two suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu, remain at large.
Additional Developments:
On Thursday night, police confirmed that Makhanya’s parents were taken into custody: His father is the registered owner of the VW Polo allegedly used in the crime. His mother is believed to have tried to tip him off to avoid arrest.
Authorities say the hunt continues for the remaining suspects and the mastermind behind Mongale’s murder.
