Nine Foreign Nationals Arrested in Gauteng for Running Illicit Alcohol Manufacturing Plant

Gauteng police have arrested nine foreign nationals in connection with an illegal alcohol manufacturing plant operating in Westonaria. Among the suspects are two Taiwanese nationals, six Malawians, and one Mozambican, all accused of running a large-scale counterfeit liquor operation.

The bust, which took place on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, uncovered a massive stockpile of illicit alcoholic beverages, including counterfeit versions of popular whiskey, brandy, and vodka brands. The estimated street value of the seized goods is R1 million, with the alcohol found both packaged for distribution and stored in eleven 250-litre drums.

Investigation Unfolds After Employees Report Abuse

The operation was exposed after four illegal immigrant workers employed at the factory approached the local police station to report the illegal activities. Some of the employees claimed they were being held against their will and forced to work long hours under inhumane conditions.

According to Gauteng provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni, authorities are now investigating possible charges of kidnapping in addition to the existing contraventions of the Liquor Act and the Customs Act.

Court Appearance and Legal Proceedings

The arrested individuals are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrate Court, where they will face charges related to:

• Dealing in illicit liquor

• Contravention of the Liquor Act

• Contravention of the Customs Act

• Potential additional charges, including kidnapping

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are still ongoing and that further arrests could follow as they dig deeper into the network behind this illegal operation.

Second Major Bust in Westonaria in a Week

This incident comes just days after police raided a R10 million drug lab in the same area, highlighting the increasing presence of illegal operations in Westonaria. Law enforcement officials have vowed to intensify crackdowns on illicit trade and criminal syndicates operating in the region.

The arrest of these nine foreign nationals serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against counterfeit goods and human exploitation. The case will now proceed through the courts, as authorities work to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
